Class Accommodations

Note-takers: ÌýIf you have a disabilityÌýthat makes it difficult to take notes,Ìýnote-takers can help.Ìý

Alternate format texts and assignments: Need large print texts or printed overheads? We can format textbooks to be used by Kurzweil, a speech-to-text software popular with people who haveÌýa disability that affects their reading.Ìý

Recording:ÌýRecordingÌýcan be used in classÌýif it isÌýpart of needed accommodations and JKC Audio Recording Agreement is signed.ÌýÌý

Preferential seating: We can arrange to seat you up frontÌýif it helps you see the board or screen better or for other reasons that relate to your disability.ÌýOther seating arrangements can be made as well, based onÌýyourÌýdisability.Ìý

Test and Exam Accommodations

Proctor services and alternative scheduling: Depending on your disability, we may be able to provide you with exam supervision in a quiet area separate from your regular class. We may also be able to schedule your exam at a different time.ÌýÌý

Alternate format tests and exams: We can have your tests and exams printed in large font or conducted orally, depending on your needs.ÌýÌý

Extended testing period: ÌýIf you have a disability thatÌýcauses you to take longer to write tests and exams,Ìýwe may be able to extend the test or exam time.Ìý

Use of technology and other aids:ÌýIf ²â´Ç³Ü’r±ð a student with a disability, use of a computer might be a needed accommodationÌýforÌýreading or writing technology, orÌýto display your exam with an increased font size.

Readers: IfÌýyou needÌýsomeone toÌýreadÌýyour test or exam to youÌýdue to your vision or a learning disability, we canÌýarrange forÌýthat.Ìý

Scribes: If you have a disability that makes it difficult to write or type answers for your tests orÌýexams,Ìýwe can arrange for a scribeÌýto assist you.Ìý

Other Accommodations

Reduced course load: IfÌý²â´Ç³Ü’r±ðÌýa student with a disability, two courses per termÌýis theÌýminimumÌýcourse loadÌýtoÌýmaintainÌýfull-time status. This is important when applying for financialÌýassistance.Ìý

Canadian students with disabilities are eligible for grants through their provincial governments for the following servicesÌýbased on their disability.ÌýThese servicesÌýare a fee basedÌýand the Jennifer Keeping Centre simply helps match students withÌýaÌýservice provider.ÌýÌý

Tutors: We ensure that suggestedÌýtutors are students who have performed well in that course in previousÌýyears orÌýhave completed equivalentÌýcourseworkÌýor have a degree in the subject matter.Ìý

Learning Strategist:ÌýÌýStrategistsÌýmeet with the student toÌýwork on study skills, time management and organizational skills.ÌýStrategistsÌýusuallyÌýhave aÌýBachelor of Education,ÌýMaster’sÌýDegree,Ìýor work experience in the field.Ìý

Educational Attendants: Individuals whoÌýassistÌýstudentsÌýinÌýgetting to and from class, take notes andÌýassistÌýthem with attending activities on campus.Ìý

Requesting Accommodations

To requestÌýaccommodations and/or assistive technologyÌýfrom the Jennifer Keeping Centre, students must register using theÌýAccommodate online portal.

This technology includes:

Computers: TheÌýJKCÌýhasÌýcomputers are equipped withÌýassistive technologyÌýsoftware such asÌýtext readers and speech to text.ÌýÌý

Scanner/Printer:ÌýOur scanner is used to digitize notes from note takersÌýand for students to print notes or slides.ÌýHandouts may also be converted to digital text to allow for the use of screen readers.Ìý

Alternative Format Texts: Textbooks can beÌýpurchasedÌýin digital format initially or if that is not available the Jennifer Keeping Center can apply to the publisher for a digital copy if the studentÌýpurchasesÌýthe physical text andÌýprovides a receipt to the JKC via .

Laptop/Computer/Tablet: This is based on the student’s needÌýand can be used in many ways such as organization or running assistive technology.Ìý

Software: Assistive software can be used to helps students in many areas such as text to speech, speech to text,Ìýmind mapping,Ìýnote taking, orÌýorganization.Ìý(Please note that you do not need to buy Microsoft Office 365 as it isÌýprovidedÌýfor allÌýCBUÌýstudents.)Ìý

Noise Cancelling Headphones:ÌýThese may be needed for students who have trouble concentrating due to their disability.Ìý

Braille embosser: This technology allows students toÌýembossÌýor print text material directly from a computer orÌýtablet.Ìý

BrailleÌýnoteÌýtaking devices:ÌýBrailleÌýnoteÌýtaking devicesÌýmake it easier for students,Ìýwho use braille,Ìýto take notes efficiently and effectively.Ìý

Magnification:ÌýMagnification programs and equipment can assist students who need enlarged text or graphic materials.ÌýÌý

JAWS: ÌýJob AccessÌýWithÌýSpeech is a text-to-speech program that reads screen textÌýaloudÌýto the student. It requires the use of keyboard commandsÌýand is used by students who are blind or have low vision.Ìý
