Cape Breton University (CBU) and Discovery Centre (Halifax) have undertaken a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), with the spirit of cooperation and reciprocity beneficial to both parties. The agreement is in effect for five years from December 21, 2022, and may be renewed or amended by mutual agreement.
The history of the Discovery Centre began in the 1970s when Dr. Gerhard Stroink, Dr. Richard Goldbloom and Liz Crocker came together to establish a science society that could be accessible to Nova Scotians. It was first registered as a non-profit society in 1985 and as a charitable organization in 1989. In February 2017, it opened its dream location in a LEED Platinum-certified building on the Halifax waterfront. To date, the Centre has welcomed more than two million visitors.
With this partnership, CBU and the Discovery Centre agree to encourage the development of the following types of activities:
– Explore mutually beneficial strategies that support the aims of both institutions.
– Cooperate in designing and delivering 鈥淪cience on the Road鈥 and 鈥淕en Action鈥 programming under the sponsorship of CBU.
– Collaborate to provide CBU faculty and staff as well as DC staff with learning opportunities.
– Explore opportunities for co-branding of both institutions for related programming.
– Other youth program opportunities.
The University looks forward to hosting various events to support outreach and engagement in the Halifax region, an ongoing partnership that will benefit both organizations and the communities they serve.
鈥淲ithin the MOU, the first initiative we鈥檙e focused on is sponsoring the Discovery Centre鈥檚 Science on the Road sessions which have been developed with the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development to meet the Science 10 curriculum,鈥 says Matthew Brown, CBU鈥檚 Recruitment and Engagement Specialist for the Halifax market. 鈥淭his means the Discovery Centre science educators will travel to local high schools to provide fun and targeted interactive sessions. It鈥檚 great for the local schools鈥 students and staff, while meeting both CBU鈥檚 and DC鈥檚 initiatives.鈥
