Starting Again Stronger: Meet Carla Jessome
After nearly two decades of putting her dreams on hold, Carla Jessome returned to Cape Breton University with one clear goal: to finish what she started. Now preparing to graduate with a Bachelor of Education (BEd), she reflects on the journey that led her back to the classroom.
Carla first came to CBU in 2006, enrolling in the Bachelor of Arts Community Studies (BACS) program with hopes of becoming a teacher. When her partner, now husband, joined the military, she paused her studies to support his career and care for their growing family. Over the next two decades, they frequently travelled for postings. While working different jobs, including 10 years as a photographer, the idea of returning to school never fully left Carla鈥檚 mind.
When her husband began planning his release from the military, Carla knew it was time. She re-enrolled in the BACS program and took online courses from the Annapolis Valley. Carla completed her final year in person after her family moved back to Cape Breton in July 2023. One thing led to another, and she continued on to pursue a BEd. 鈥淚 can鈥檛 believe I am this close to completing this degree and reaching a goal I set for myself nearly 20 years ago,鈥� she shares.
What Carla has valued most about the BEd program is learning directly from experienced educators and professionals. 鈥淥ur teachers are teachers, which means we are not only learning through the material they give us, but that we are also learning to model their knowledge and practices,鈥� she says. The practicum placements have also introduced her to associate teachers who have been incredible mentors as well.
鈥淭hrough our instructors and practicum experiences, we鈥檝e seen such a unique range of teaching styles, resources and pedagogical approaches,鈥� Carla adds. 鈥淭he confidence I鈥檝e gained has helped me to feel ready to jump into the workforce as a teacher who is inclusive and responsive to student needs.鈥�
When it comes to picking her favourite class, Carla says it鈥檚 impossible to choose. 鈥淓ach instructor has brought a unique perspective on teaching, and every course has been so finely tuned to support our growth as pre-service teachers,鈥� she shares. 鈥淲e鈥檙e learning to teach with differentiation, culturally responsive pedagogy and universal design, but with examples from all subjects and outcomes, so our course content really blends and connects all the subject matter.鈥�
During her time at CBU, Carla took part in many activities, from attending Mawio鈥檓is and participating in workshops led by Artists in Residence, to celebrating at the BEd Gala. She also enjoyed being able to focus on Celtic studies and taking some Gaelic and music classes.
Coming back to university as a mature student wasn鈥檛 without its challenges, but Carla found a strong support system at CBU. 鈥淚 felt very anxious about how I would adapt to school again, but CBU has reminded me that you鈥檙e never too old to start something new,鈥� she says. 鈥淭he CBU 福利免费在线看 was welcoming, supportive and encouraging. There is no time limit on education, and being a life-long learner will be a true gift for myself and my future students.鈥�
Throughout her academic journey, Carla has leaned on the incredible support of her loved ones, from her three children and husband to extended family and friends. Surrounded by this village, she was never alone in her return to school. To those considering a similar path, Carla encourages them to be open and ask questions. 鈥淒on鈥檛 be afraid to try something new, you might love geology and not even know it,鈥� she says. 鈥淎nd don鈥檛 hesitate to ask for help when you need it!鈥�
Carla is in the last stretch of her degree before crossing the convocation stage. She plans to begin substitute teaching as soon as possible and take some time to focus on her family and career before eventually exploring some master’s programs. As she looks ahead, Carla is proud of her fellow graduates, particularly future educators. 鈥淚 can鈥檛 wait to see the incredible impact each of you will make in your classrooms and communities,鈥� she says. 鈥淗ere鈥檚 to finishing strong and celebrating all that we鈥檝e achieved!鈥澛�
